How to Dress for Cycling by Temperature: No More Freezing Descents and Sweaty Climbs

You set out at eight in the morning, the thermometer reads 9 °C, and you are shivering in short sleeves. Two hours later, the sun is blazing, and you wish you had left that long insulated jersey at home. But then comes a multi-kilometer shadowed descent, an icy headwind cuts right through your sweaty clothes, and you return home at dusk when the temperature drops faster than you expected.

In autumn and early spring, two seasons regularly meet during a single ride. The solution is not to wear one thick layer, but to build your outfit so you can adjust it on the go in a matter of seconds.

Why a single warm layer fails

One warm layer only works until you start sweating. Then you get too hot, and as soon as you stop or start descending, the wet material quickly cools you down. Multiple thinner layers each have their own specific job:

Base layer wicks sweat away from the body. Reach for a functional synthetic shirt or a base layer jersey—cotton never belongs in a sports system because it absorbs and holds moisture.

Middle layer Maintains an insulating air pocket close to the body. This includes a long insulated jersey or a combination of a short-sleeve jersey with warmers, turning it into a versatile long-sleeve set.

Outer layer Builds a barrier against the elements. A lightweight windbreaker, a functional vest, or a membrane jacket prevents freezing air from reaching your warmed-up body.

Two golden rules for the start

  • You should feel slightly chilly at the start. Once you get going, your muscles will generate operating heat within ten minutes. If you feel comfortably warm while locking your front door, you will boil after the first kilometer.

  • Account for your own wind chill. Riding creates airflow that knocks the feels-like temperature during a descent several degrees lower than what your home thermometer shows. Morning fog and afternoon sun represent two completely different climates.

What to wear based on current temperature

  • Above 20 °C: A classic short-sleeve jersey and bib shorts. If you are heading out early in the morning into the hills, just toss a lightweight packable vest into your back pocket for the descents.

  • 15–20 °C: The proven combo of a short-sleeve jersey and seamless Scalda Arm warmers. They don't pinch or chafe, and the stretchy material stays on your arm without slipping. Once it warms up at noon, simply pull them down, roll them up, and stash them in your jersey pocket.

  • 10–15 °C: Time to protect your legs. Your knees face the direct brunt of the wind and have almost no warming muscles, so they get cold the fastest. Put on full Scalda Leg warmers or shorter Scalda Knee warmers. A windproof vest and thin full-finger gloves are mandatory at these temperatures.

  • 5–10 °C: Warmers alone won't cut it anymore. Under a long-sleeve jersey goes a quality functional base layer, topped with a windproof layer, and long bib tights on your legs. Extremities start to suffer immensely—add warmer gloves, an insulated headband under your helmet, and shoe covers to stop cold wind blowing through the sole vents.

  • Below 5 °C: Full winter gear. An insulated jacket, thick membrane tights, winter gloves, a warm neck gaiter, and a skull cap under your helmet. Always pack a dry spare layer in your pocket in case of an emergency stop.

Practical tip for warmers: Tuck the top edge of your arm warmers under your jersey sleeves, and your leg warmers under your bib shorts. This prevents drafty gaps and helps the warmers stay up better. They need to fit snugly, so check the size chart before buying.

Versatility beats material thickness

There is no single universal piece of clothing for both a foggy morning and a warm afternoon. A reliable solution is a system you can adjust right in the saddle in a matter of seconds. The foundation for unpredictable autumn weather is a lightweight summer jersey paired with packable warmers.
